About
Welcome. This site explores the history of Los Angeles County, California from the time the state was established to around the early 1900s. It will mainly be focused on the various public work projects that helped the area expand not only in jurisdiction but population as well. It is a rather interesting story on how land development was able to make way for the region that would eventually be Hollywood, which would really bring Los Angeles to the map. Readers will be fascinated by the various images that give a view into how different LA looked in the past, but text to also understand social issues of the time brought on by this migration. This site would be best helpful for historical students and educators with their own research assignments. However, native Angelinos might also better understand island and find interest in the site if they wish to learn more about their home. Even non-residents might enjoy the site and be tempted to visit LA.
Please be aware that some content reflects racial views and predjuedices as they are products of their time. These depictions were wrong then as they are now and in no way reflect the viewpoints of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. However, keeping this content, hopefully, will give a better understanding on how so much land could be taken from the Mexican and Native American population who already resided there, and to keep the white men in wealth and power.
