The Compact of Free Association is a document which officializes the relationship between the Republic of Palau and the United States of America. In exchange for monetary support to Palau and the rights of its citizens to enter and work in the United States with non-immigrant status, the United States is granted military access to the country's lands, waters, and airspace.
The Compact negotiations began after Palauan citizens voted to be independed from the federated alliance formed by its neighboring islands in 1978. Through the turbulent 80s and early 90s, Palauans fought for a Compact agreement which granted them autonomy with the greatest benefit to their lands and people.
